Resources From Self Care: 30 Compelling Life Lessons from Happy, Healthy, and Successful Women…and some men!
Hi there,
Thanks for landing here where you will find links to many of the sites, books, and products mentioned in my book, plus some related ones. And if you haven’t already, sign up for my Self Care Community here where we will explore many of these topics in greater depth in the coming months.
PART 1: Your Life
Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Body was the start of the Self-Help movement and the start of her massively successful Hay House Publishing Company. Then came You Can Heal Your Life, and The Power Within You. When I worked for her in the 1980’s I paid attention to how she thought and lived her life. She was an inspiration and a teacher, even when she wasn’t actually teaching courses or giving presentations. She walked the walk and was one of my role models.
Eileen Williams’ Land the Job You Love is chock full of practical, useful, and actionable information for any job seeker. It should be required reading for any new job seeker or those re-entering the job market.
You will likely discover how much marketable skills you have – more than you ever considered. That information can not only help you apply for and get a better work situation, but it will build a lot of self esteem as well.
PART 2: Your Health
Dr. Takvorian-Mishra’s websites are terrific resources for information and courses on Ayurvedic medicine. They also provide deep insights into the efficacy of various herbs, foods, and formulas, all of which are also available on the site. The Pro Sleep Plus cream she recommended in the video is in this link along with several other sleep aids. (I LOVE it and rub it in on my feet every night for a deep sleep.) Here is her Knowledge Website, Svayurveda, and Here is her product website, Chandika.
Environmental Working Group’s website Skin Deep is one I visit constantly to look up ingredients on skin care, makeup, and household products. You can also look up specific manufacturer’s products to see how they fare in overall health and safety.
Their Tapwater Water safety page is here.
Healthy Indoor Consultants site is a must visit if you have any concerns about mold, or other toxins, if you are adding to your home or do a renovation project.
Detoxification of our environments is becoming an increasingly important issue and they provide a great service to help homeowners create a healthy atmosphere in the home.
Dr. Douillard’s LifeSpa website features several of his books and courses as well as a free copy of his ‘Digestible Guide to Gut Health. His website offers a cornucopia of information on topics ranging from Ayurvedic medicine to stress management, fitness, detoxification and much more. Here is a link to his Amazon books page.
Safe Skin Care Products
Eminence Organics – This is a Canadian company, founded in Hungary, that for decades has been winning award for their skincare products. I love several. Their Bright Skin Masque and Artic Berry Pell and Peptide treatment are my go-to products. Just also ordered the Stonecrop cleanser. This is a link to the site from my dear friend Melissa Spenker, who is an aesthetician in the Santa Barbara California area.
Pura d’Or Argan Oil – There are so many complex treatments for dry skin and it can be very confusing. But I typically look for formulas with the fewest ingredients and those I can understand. For dry skin and/or for mixing with essential oils you simply can’t beat this Argan oil. If you have a lot of thick hair, it’s a great treatment too. (Mine is very fine and sparse – it would weight it down too much.) And as a big plus, it’s really inexpensive. Here’s my Amazon link.
Ella and Mila Nail Polish – I don’t know if any nail polishes are truly non-toxic, but several new ones are manufactured without the heavy toxins prevalent in most. (They all will still have those chemical odors.) But if you are going to use polish or get a mani/pedi, it’s worth finding those with the fewest harmful ingredients possible. In spite of the thickness, our nails do absorb what is put on them. Here is one from a company called Ella and Mila.
Diane Ackerman’s A Natural History of the Senses is an informative and highly entertaining read as a dive into understanding the power of our senses.
PART 3: Your Relationships
Denise Lampron contributed the thoughtful and about self-care in relationships. Connect with Denise Lampron’s The Art of Mindful Aging on Facebook.
Find like minded people through the MeetUp website for your area or wherever you might be visiting.
And speaking of visiting an area, if you are hesitant to travel alone Road Scholar is an excellent way to learn about new places – locally, nationally, and internationally, and make new friends and acquaintances.
PART 4: Your Mind
My meditation practice for the past 52 years has been the Transcendental Meditation™ technique. It’s not simply for relaxation, although that is a definite, proven benefit. I feel it elevated the quality of my life in every area over the past 52 years.
Dr. Norman Doidge’s The Brain that Changes Itself is a must-read for science buffs and laymen who want to learn more about the brilliance of the brain and how it can heal itself.
PART 5: Your Emotions
In the lesson, Laugh Every Day” you read about the value of daily laughter and learned some ways to make that happen. I polled my readers on what movies and books made them laugh. As you can imagine the opinions were highly varied and individual. But here are a few films that almost everyone agreed about. (All of these are linked to Amazon’s Prime page.)
From Lesson 23: Stay Inspired.
Staying inspired in the face of challenges, tragedies, and defeat is crucial to physical and emotional well-being. Here are some of the books mentioned in this lesson.
Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way
The book that started me on my writer’s journey and that can help you connect with your inner soul, intuition, and creativity.
John O’Donoghue’s Walking in Wonder is a lyrical treatise on the magic in the world, imagination, spiritual renewal.
Daniel Castro’s Hidden Solutions All Around You offers a way to discover how sometimes the obvious is the right answer.
They say there’s nothing new under the sun. But the way you experience it and tell it is new. Austin Kleon’s Steal Like an Artist explains how to bring your voice to what you already know.
Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now has become a standard for seekers and those who desire more balance and harmony in their lives.
For those with the travel bug or who simply tend to “find themselves” when they are removed from their familiar environments, Rita Goldman Gelman’s Tales of a Female Nomad, Living At Large in the World offers a glimpse into how other cultures can hone and clarify our own.
